The Sudanese Standards & Metrology Organization was established in 1992 as an independent organization under the Presidency to succeed the Department of Standards of the Ministry of Industry, which existed since 1969. A decision was made to combine with SSMO the Weights and Measures Department and the Quality Control Department of the Ministry of Trade and Industry to form the nucleus of the present SSMO.

SSMO is active in the fields of developments and publication of Sudanese Standards, scientific and legal metrology including assay of precious metals and stones, as well as control and assurance of quality, research and development. SSMO has its headquarters in the capital Khartoum and has branches in the states of the country, in particular, those states where import entry points exist.
