The Gambia Standards Bureau Act of 2010 established The Gambia Standards Bureau. It became operational in October 2011. In accordance with the Act, the Gambia Quality Policy 2014 assigned the roles of Standardization, Industrial and Scientific Metrology, Conformity Assessment (Inspection, Testing and Certification) to the Bureau.

The Bureau has also been notified to the WTO since December 2013 as the WTO TBT Enquiry Point. It is the National Metrology Institute and set up the National Metrology Laboratory for this purpose. The Bureau is a Member of SMIIC, Correspondent Member of ISO, Affiliate Member of IEC and Member of AFRIMET.
