The basic idea of establishing Iran National Standards Organization (INSO) emerged upon the approval of "The Law of Weights and Measures" in 1925. Following the approval of the bill to establish ISIRI in 1960, the Institute became operational within the framework of the specified functions and responsibilities consequently joined the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) in the same year.

In 2011, INSO's national level was structured as an organization under the direct supervision of the President of Islamic Republic of Iran as it has already been under the supervision of Ministry of Industry, Mines and Commerce.
