first virtual foundation training for SMIIC Member Countries on the "OIC/SMIIC 22:2021 Halal Edible Gelatine – Requirements and Test Methods", held from 21–22 July 2025.

The Standards and Metrology Institute for Islamic Countries (SMIIC) successfully organized its first virtual foundation training for SMIIC Member Countries on the "OIC/SMIIC 22:2021 Halal Edible Gelatine – Requirements and Test Methods", held from 21–22 July 2025.

The training was delivered in English by Dr. Mohammed Ali Alsheikh Wace, Specialist and Technical Assistant, from the SMIIC General Secretariat.

The OIC/SMIIC 22:2021 standard, is the first international halal gelatin standard in the world. It sets forth comprehensive requirements and test methods for halal edible gelatin, addressing both religious and technical aspects.

The training aimed to provide participants with a solid understanding of the fundamental requirements of halal gelatin production and certification. The course content covered:

  • The historical background and development process of OIC/SMIIC 22
  • Raw material sources and halal prerequisites
  • Gelatine manufacturing process in compliance with Islamic rules
  • Hygienic practices and contamination prevention
  • Test methods and product evaluation
  • Practical implementation and certification considerations

The program also included interactive sessions, case examples, and a final evaluation to consolidate learning and encourage active engagement among participants. A total of 53 participants from 12 member countries attended the training

This initiative represents a key milestone in enhancing technical capacity among member states and promoting the harmonized implementation of halal standards, particularly in the field of food ingredients like gelatin a substance widely used in food, pharmaceutical, and cosmetic products.

SMIIC continues to prioritize capacity-building and knowledge-sharing among its members to advance the halal quality infrastructure across the OIC region and globally.
