The Standards and Metrology Institute for Islamic Countries (SMIIC) held a meeting with representatives of the United Nations Forum on Sustainability Standards (UNFSS) on 15 January 2026, at the United Nations Office at Geneva.

The meeting was held with Mr. Santiago Fernández de Córdoba and Mr. Paulo Mortara Batistic, during which views were exchanged on possible areas of cooperation between UNFSS and SMIIC. Discussions focused on SMIIC’s mandate, ongoing activities, and strategic objectives, as well as opportunities for collaboration within the framework of sustainability standards.

During the meeting, a proposal for a potential activity under the SMIIC General Assembly framework was discussed. In this context, the role of SMIIC was envisaged primarily in the areas of information services, communication, and capacity building, in line with its institutional mandate.

Both sides emphasized the value of continued dialogue and cooperation, with a view to supporting informed policymaking, enhancing institutional capacities, and promoting the effective use of sustainability standards.
