The Standards and Metrology Institute for Islamic Countries (SMIIC) and the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) signed a Letter of Intent on 15 January 2026 at WIPO Headquarters in Geneva, marking an important step towards strengthening cooperation between the two organizations.
The Letter of Intent was signed by SMIIC Secretary General, Mr. Ihsan Övüt, and WIPO Director General, H.E. Mr. Daren Tang, reflecting the shared commitment of both organizations to enhance collaboration within their respective mandates.
The Letter of Intent provides a framework for cooperation for the implementation of the WIPO–SMIIC Joint Action Plan, focusing on key areas such as awareness raising and promotion, capacity building and training, specialized resources, and network building. The cooperation aims to support innovation promotion, institutional capacity development, and sustainable economic growth for the benefit of Member States.
The signing ceremony, held at WIPO Headquarters, underscored the importance of coordinated efforts between international organizations in addressing global challenges related to intellectual property, standardization, and sustainable development.
SMIIC looks forward to the effective implementation of the Joint Action Plan and to further strengthening its cooperation with WIPO in the coming period.
