Enhancing Consistency in Halal Standards Across Member States: SMIIC Conducts Training on OIC/SMIIC 49:2025

In line with its mission to support Member States in maximizing the benefits and promoting the adoption of OIC/SMIIC standards, the Standards and Metrology Institute for Islamic Countries successfully organized and conducted on 26 March 2026 a virtual training course on OIC/SMIIC 49:2025 – Terms and Definitions Related to Halal Standard. The training was delivered in English and brought together participants from across SMIIC Member States.

A total of 80  participants attended the training, including professionals, technical experts, and Halal standards translators. The inclusion of translators highlights their critical role in ensuring the accurate interpretation, harmonization, and effective dissemination of Halal standards across different languages and regions.

The training program covered a range of key topics, including:

  • History and introduction to OIC/SMIIC 49:2025
  • The need for and importance of terms and definitions in Halal standards
  • Key competencies required for Halal standards translators
  • Required qualifications and professional background
  • Code of ethics and professional responsibility
  • Understanding normative language in standards (e.g., “shall,” “should,” “can,” “may”)
  • Importance of terminology consistency
  • Evaluation test

Through such initiatives, SMIIC continues to play a vital role in fostering standardization and improving quality infrastructure.
