The SMIIC (1+1) Project continued on 8 September 2026 with a practical training clinic on internal auditing in testing and calibration laboratories, bringing together some 40 participants from national standardization, metrology and accreditation institutions across SMIIC Member States.

The session was presented by Dr. Dea Winiarti, Senior Conformity Assessment Staff and Laboratory Assessor at the National Accreditation Committee (KAN) and the National Standardization Agency of Indonesia (BSN), the mentoring institution of the programme, together with a colleague from BSN. Building on the module on laboratory accreditation delivered on 1 September, the clinic addressed internal auditing as a management tool for laboratories operating under ISO/IEC 17025, drawing on the audit guidance of ISO 19011. Participants were taken through the purpose and principles of internal audits, the competence expected of auditors, the planning and conduct of an audit, and the identification and reporting of findings and their follow-up.

A question-and-answer session followed, during which participants raised practical questions on audit checklists and auditor impartiality, and discussed the relationship between the laboratory competence requirements and the OIC/SMIIC standard applying to halal testing laboratories. The presentation is being shared with participants.

The module was prepared in response to the needs submitted by Member States in the field of conformity assessment and accreditation and was opened to all interested Member States.

Implemented under Project No. 16 of the Two-Year Implementation Plan 2025–2026, the SMIIC (1+1) Project pairs advanced Member States with those seeking support in standardization, metrology and conformity assessment.
