SMIIC (1+1) Project Delivers Training on Temperature and Humidity Calibration

The SMIIC (1+1) Project continued on 21 September 2026 with a training module on temperature and humidity calibration, bringing together more than 30 participants from national metrology, standardization and accreditation institutions across SMIIC Member States.

The session was presented by Dr. Arfan Sindhu Tistomo of the National Standardization Agency of Indonesia (BSN), the mentoring institution of the programme. The first part of the module addressed the fundamentals of temperature metrology, including the International Temperature Scale of 1990 (ITS-90), defining fixed points, and contact and non-contact temperature sensors such as thermocouples, resistance thermometers and radiation thermometers. Dr. Tistomo then explained the calibration of temperature measuring instruments through comparison against reference standards, simulation of electrical signals and the realization of fixed points, illustrated with practical examples of equipment and procedures used in the laboratory. The second part introduced humidity metrology, covering the main humidity parameters, including relative humidity and dew-point temperature, the principal types of hygrometers, and calibration methods using psychrometers, saturated salt solutions and humidity generators.

A question-and-answer session followed, in which participants discussed practical calibration challenges in their own laboratories, including the choice of bath media and calibration equipment, the characterisation of the stability and homogeneity of dry-block calibrators, and the evaluation of measurement uncertainty. Dr. Tistomo responded with practical recommendations and referred participants to internationally recognised calibration guidelines for further study.

The module was prepared in response to the needs submitted by Member States in the field of metrology and was opened to all interested Member States.

Implemented under Project No. 16 of the Two-Year Implementation Plan 2025–2026, the SMIIC (1+1) Project pairs advanced Member States with those seeking support in standardization, metrology and conformity assessment. Following its launch on 4 August 2026, further online sessions will continue in the coming weeks.
