The SMIIC (1+1) Project continued on 22 September 2026 with the second and concluding part of the training module on institutional development and the strengthening of national standardization bodies (NSBs), bringing together more than 30 participants from national standardization, metrology and accreditation institutions across SMIIC Member States.
The session was presented by Ms. Dohana V. Femina of the National Standardization Agency of Indonesia (BSN), the mentoring institution of the programme. Building on the first part delivered on 2 September, she walked participants through the full life cycle of an Indonesian National Standard (SNI), from planning and technical committee work to public review, publication and maintenance, guided by the principles of openness, transparency and consensus, and explained the procedure for adopting international standards. The presentation then turned to implementation: the division of roles between BSN, which establishes conformity assessment schemes for voluntary standards, and the government agencies responsible for mandatory ones, and BSN’s function as Indonesia’s notification body and enquiry point under the WTO Agreement on Technical Barriers to Trade. Ms. Femina also described how BSN supports small and medium-sized enterprises in applying standards and mentors conformity assessment bodies towards accreditation through its regional technical service offices, and gave an overview of the national accreditation system operated by the National Accreditation Committee (KAN), including its accreditation schemes and process.
A lively question-and-answer session followed, in which participants raised questions on the international recognition of accreditation, the adoption of international standards, the scope of technical committees and specific product standards. Participants also expressed interest in closer technical cooperation with BSN, which the mentoring institution welcomed. The presentation materials from both parts of the module have been shared with participants.
The module was prepared in response to the needs submitted by Member States in the field of standardization and was opened to all interested Member States.
Implemented under Project No. 16 of the Two-Year Implementation Plan 2025–2026, the SMIIC (1+1) Project pairs advanced Member States with those seeking support in standardization, metrology and conformity assessment. Following its launch on 4 August 2026, further online sessions will continue in the coming weeks.
