SMIIC and WIPO Sign Letter of Intent at WIPO Headquarters in Geneva

SMIIC has positioned itself, by nature, as a common platform to make possible for the active participation of SMIIC Member States for the cooperation in the domain of standardization, metrology and accreditation. It is expected that OIC Member States shall leverage the SMIIC as a forum for discussion and exchange of views and experiences on issues of common interest. It could form part of an array of regional initiatives countries can leverage in their efforts to upgrade quality infrastructure, including through international harmonization and mutual recognition of conformity assessments. SMIIC is the platform that can help the capacity building of the OIC Member States, especially the LDCs, which have no quality infrastructure in their respective countries.

What is SMIIC?

The Standards and Metrology Institute for the Islamic Countries(SMIIC), as a sound mechanism for harmonization of standards among the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation(OIC) countries and for preparation of new ones, aims at realizing harmonized standards in the Member States and eliminating technical barriers to trade and thus developing the trade among themselves. It shall establish certification and accreditation schemes for the purpose of expediting exchange of materials, manufactured goods and products among Member States beginning with mutual recognition of certificates.
SMIIC and Quality Infrastructure

Quality Infrastructure is generally understood to be the totality of the institutional framework (public and private) required to establish and implement standardization, metrology (scientific, industrial and legal), accreditation and conformity assessment services (inspection, testing and product- and system certification) necessary to provide acceptable evidence that products and services meet defined requirements, be it demanded by authorities or the market place. SMIIC takes place in public driven part of quality infrastructure of OIC Member States, which are standardization, metrology and accreditation.
How are Standards Developed?
An OIC/SMIIC standard is developed by a panel of experts, within a technical committee. Once the need for a standard has been established, these experts meet to discuss and negotiate a draft standard. As soon as a draft has been developed it is shared with SMIIC’s members who are asked to comment and vote on it. If a consensus is reached the draft becomes an OIC/SMIIC standard, if not it goes back to the technical committee for further edits.
